Blast from the Past

Dear Readers,

Mum still hasn't bought a new camera to take pictures of us cute little critters so we are offering some pictures from the past. Mum couldn't imagine rat piles being comfortable, especially when we piled-up in tight quarters..enjoy!

My Old Girl Emma

Dear Readers,

Mom had to bring to the vet this week because I sounded congested and the vet put me on terrible tasting medications Baytril and Doxycycline; but mom knows how to sweeten these meds which is a bonus! Mom also noticed that I was getting up there in age - I'm 2 years and 6 months old which is about 75 years in human years. Mom was a bit sad over my entering the geriatric years but besides sounding stuffed-up I am doing just fine. Although, I do rest more and I am slowing down. Mom says she'll be taking out the geriatric cage soon so I can get around much easier.

Oh, on an unrelated note, we are having a visitor to our bird feeders - a cute chipmunk! The canine Mabel would love to chase s/her but of course, mom won't let her!

Rattie Crew Declaration of Rat Rights

Good day Readers,

Well, mum's camera is not working well so we haven't been updating our blog much. We really hope mum gets a new camera as soon as possible.

Now, us rats have decided to write a "Rattie Crew Declaration of Rat Rights" for the canine and human before making Mabel an official member of the Rattie Crew. Here's the draft letter: (Did we leave anything out?)

All rats are born free and equal in dignity and rights. We are endowed with reason and conscience; not just canines and humans.

All rats have the right to be treated with kindness from humans and canines.

All rats are entitled to privacy, respect, rights and freedoms regardless of our shape, fur colour, squeaks, age, gender, etc.

All rats have the right right to life, liberty, safety, and security from humans and canines.

All rats will not be held in servitude by humans or canines; on the other hand, humans and canines can be held in servitude by rats.

We will not be teased, chased, harrassed, barked at in any way by canines or humans.

If anything is found chewed or damaged all rats are presumed innocent; although, canines may be investigated by designated human.

All rats have the right to freedom of movement without fear; but canine movements will be restricted when rats are outside their residence.

All rats have the right to their own clean residence that include fresh bedding, food, water, and toys, without sharing such residence with a canine; canine will have their own bed, dishes, etc. safely away from rat residence.

All rats have the right to safe freedom of assembly and association without danger from canines or humans.

All rats have the right to rest and leisure; humans also have said right especially if leisure involves playing with rats but must also work to provide the necessities for rats. Canines may also have the right to rest and leisure only if said recreation does not involve chasing, teasing, barking, or harrassing rats.

Lastly, all rats have the right to (and deserve) kisses, scrtiches, cuddles, and treats from humans regardless if a canine is present.

September Update

Hello Dear Readers,

It’s been awhile since we’ve updated our blog but it has been rather busy here! I hope all of you had a great summer!

Although mum has a big playpen for us rats, sometimes she lets us run around the room where we can get into lots of trouble, heh heh heh Well, Brie and I managed to figure out how to climb-up the book shelf to check out mum’s stuff animal collection. Mum is amazed that we could get to the top of the book shelf since its a rather tall shelf and is dying to find out how! But Brie and I will not share our little secret, heh heh heh Mum thinks we blended quite well the the stuff animals so she took some pictures. Can you find the real critters??

Oh, the canine mum named Mabel, is still with us although is behaving much better towards us rats. We rats have not decided yet if we should make her an official member of the Rattie Crew or not. Mum will be bringing Mabel to obedience class in October to help her with socializing skills. Rats don’t need obedience classes because we are naturally well-behaved and well-socialized critters! Well, I should get back to chewing my new toy bought us!

Cheers!

BRIE: Hello Dear Readers,

I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer! Here's a bit of an update on the Rattie Crew...first an update on me! Although, I'm the new rat on the block I'm adjusting wonderfully. I no longer hide in my box whenever mum comes in the room and I've discovered the world of exploring. I use to be terrified of coming out of my cage into the playpen but now I have no fear and can't wait until the next adventure.

Here's an update on Poe. The little guy has been a member of the Rattie Crew for one year this month and mum thinks he has also turned two years old! So Happy Birthday Poe. In celebration mum made us a yummy fruit smoothie! Last summer, Poe was found abandoned in a vacant apartment and mum adopted him.

The last update is about this canine who has joined the household, Mabel. Apparently, Mabel is staying and us rats are not sure of this decision. On the other hand, because of this dog we now have our very own room! Mum has put up a baby gate at the door so the dog won't bother us. Mabel has stolen mum's heart and is staying. But, mum still spoils us rats and we would not have it any other way! Mabel will be going to training soon which will give her some manners, hopefully.

So that's the latest update!

Cheers!

Mabel

Well, our mom is quite smitten with Mabel and would love to keep her but there are many issues to deal with and mom, being a very inexperience dog person, is not sure she's up for the challenge. After consulting a vet and a dog trainer, Mabel has a VERY strong prey drive - that's why she wants to eat us so badly. Mom brought her for a walk last evening through a trail and mom said she wanted to attack any dog smaller than her and chase squirrels (a.k.a. rats with good public relations). So far, we are not impressed with this pooch mom finds so endearing. We've let mom know just how unhappy we are by no longer using the litter box and stinking up our room with extra peeing sessions and fear poop. Would you be happy if there was a huge four legged creature in the house always barking at you and trying really hard to eat you?! Anyway, below is a picture of Mabel looking so cute but underneath that adorable face is a rodent hunter!!
